Psyche Radio Trailer

Psyche Radio Trailer by Connor Barclay br />
This is the radio trailer for the film psyche, we used common horror conventions in this piece, which we first analysed in the insidious and paranormal activity trailers. such as dark eerie music, played on a piano. a deep voice for much of the voiceover, however by doubling this up with the voice of our main actor, we challenged common horror conventions, we did this to add a more sinister mood, which i believe we achieved very well. in addition to this the trailer is approximately forty seconds of audio, this gives us ample opportunity to intrigue the listener using the techniques we have seen in use and used ourselves.

Psyche feedback

Psyche feedback

This is a sample of the feedback we had for our short film, "Psyche" we found this very useful as it helped us to formulate our evaluation. Giving us good feedback on the narration, story and editing and reaffirmed some things we knew we could do better given the chance again, for example the lighting situation. we chose to record the feedback and upload it to soundcloud.com because it is much more honest then people writing it down, they have to speak their minds

Facebook feedback

This is the feedback we recieved on Facebook for our film. As you can see the feedback was positive and this was very pleasing as the main aspects of our film that we personally felt we had done well, the audience mentioned and praised us for. the audience had taken the preferred meaning of our film, as they had been scared by the film as you can see by the final comment. The aspects of our film we were most pleased with was the editing and story, this was mentioned as a strong point by a few members of the audience. Also the build up of tension seems to have been very well recieved, which was aided by the choice of soundtrack. All in all i am very happy with the feedback as the main points i wanted to be strong I.e the soundtrack, story and editing, were very well recieved, and the preferred meaning was taken as the audience was scared by the film.

Psyche Final version

This is the final version of our film. We have added the non diegetic soundtrack which helps the story flow more than the version without narration as you can now tell what the character is thinking. This helps to connote that the character is caught up in his thoughts and that the problems are all in his head. The intense soundtrack also helps to build the feeling of tension and action in the chase scene.

Psyche

In cinemas December 8th

This is the script for our radio trailer, we tried to adhere to common conventions in the horror/thriller genre such as the use of a deep voice, and we will use a dark eerie soundtrack to really convey the mood in the trailer itself. we also would like to challenge the conventions of radio trailers, and i would personally like to do this by doubling up some of the voice overs, from the narrator and the actor as i believe this will create an even more haunting mood. the script for our trailer is in my opinion very strong as it creates the eerie feeling that is in the film, and the use of the main actor doing a short monologue in the trailer, means that the audience knows what to expect when watching our film as we use a monologue throughout the majority of it.

Final Psyche poster

This is the poster for our film psyche, the film works very well with this as the poster really suggests that the characters problems stem from his mind, the use of the eye is significant because it is widely regarded as "the window to the soul" using a silhouette in the eye implies that their is an unknown figure in the soul, which signifies that the unknown character in the film is a figment of his mind and comes from within. The tag-line; "what's on your mind?" again reinforces the fact that the film is about the mindset of the character. the dark colours used are conventional of horror films as they imply danger and the unknown and again, relate to the theme of the unknown in our film.

Radio trailer conventions.

After researching the insidious and paranormal activity trailers, a few key conventions became clear. the main ones being; an eerie non diegetic soundtrack to create a scary mood. also, quick, unexpected blasts of noise get the audience jumping, a sign of what is in stor should they watch the film. and finally a crescendo is often used to build up tension and again, imply what is in store should they see the film.

this is the different stages we went through during the construction of our poster, alwys with the initial sketch in mind.

Poster drafting

This is the sketch for our poster. The main thing we discussed regarding our poster was the use of an eye, we chose to do this as the eye is "the window to the soul", which conveys the idea of the internal conflict of the character. In addition to this we thought that using a silhouette in the pupil to further illustrate the idea of the unknown character in the mind and "soul" of the main character. for the poster we will use dark colours as this is a common horror/thriller convention, the use of slightly gothic style text will also add to the overall feel of a horror/thriller poster. we chose to employ these conventions so the viewer knows to some extent what to expect from our film.

we had very positive feedback for our idea, and we will definitely use this as our actual poster after working on photoshop. the main thing people liked was the idea of the eye being the window to the soul and putting a concealed figure in it.

ancillary task 2. Insidious trailer analysis

this trailers sound is very effective at building up a sense of tension and mystery from the beginning, when you hear a voice asking "are you ready?" and then a ticking sound, this makes the viewer question why the character has been asked if they are ready, creating a sense of mystery.
the use of a creaking sound is also a very typical convention of the horror genre and is widely regarded as a key code for the horror/thriller genre as it signifies haunted houses and ghosts in traditional movies. the use of blasts of static in the audio to break up the trailer are also highly effective as they give a sense of panic and erraticness which invokes fear in the listener.
the use of a crescendo is a very effective tool to build up tension as it lets the listener know something is about to happen, in this case the crescendo builds up and then the woman tells says "its not the house thats haunted, its your son", this challenges the typical convention of the haunted house and adds a new dimension which intrigues the listener further, this shows how a good quote from the film can get the listener interested more than they wouuld have been without hearing snippets from the movie.

Film script

View more documents from Connorbarclay.

This is the first draft of the script for the narration of our film, this narration will be the main way of letting the viewer understand the story of our film, that the main character is troubled by things in his life piling up on top of him until he thinks he begins to see a physical manifestation of his worries, the final line confirms what the film hints at, showing he knows he causes his own problems and he has himself to blame for his actions and attitude.
